Components for Sale

Thank you for visiting my page of components for sale. I am extremely attached to my equipment but one just must sell sometimes. If you are familiar with the market value of these components, you will no doubt notice that these are very good deals. This is because I am in a hurry to sell.

Cabasse Baltic Mk-II AND Subwoofer Thor-II

Thor-II

Like all our auctions, the bid start price is the reserve price, no guessing games. We (Birdland Audio) are selling a pair of Cabasse Baltic-MK2 (do not confuse with Baltic-II) along with the 2 stromboli subs that came with it AND one Thor-II. The Baltics have seen a few shows (see a picture of it exactely as we used them to exhibit at CES 2002) but the thor was only used once at CES 2003 and then stayed in a show room. It is my opinion that the Baltic's boxes weren't designed for shipping. I always carried them myself to the shows and I would rather sell to someone local (or near the bay area) as these don't ship well. As you may notice if you are familiar with the brand that, I purchased the Baltics directly in France; the Black version was never imported in the USA due to personal taste of the previous importer, I happen to think they are quite nice in Black, especially since these are the MK2 so the driver's membranes are also black (vs white) and thus don't stand out through the metal grill.

But enough about cosmetics, the Thor alone is worth the deal but paired with the Baltics, it makes for an outstanding system. the Baltic employs a unique sound source coherence thanks to the TC12 SCS drive. Designed and produced entirely by Cabasse, the coaxial, multi-dome TC21 system from the Atlantis speaker technology. Its three concentric diaphragms are an harmonious match made to cover the low-midrange, midrange and treble sectors. A veritable technological "tour de force", the perfect phasing between high and midrange frequencies ensures ultra-fine consistency, even off-axis. Simply put, the Baltic is an outstanding speaker BUT i haven't seen it set up properly in too many places. It can be tricky to setup and I often heard it in systems that didn't do it justice but if you leave in the bay area of better yet in the Monterey area, I'll be glad to give you a demonstration and make a believer out of you. The baltics have been a reference to me for years and, I own a pair of Baltic-II.

To top off this marvelous concentric drive, we are including a Thor-II which is the same subwoofer as Cabasse's top of the line Thor-II Artis but the finish is gray rather than wood. It actually goes well with the Baltic's gray ball. Thank's to its 30M22 30cm (12") driver and integrated 150W active amp, the Thor-II is able to reproduce bass with both depth and power. It effortlessly goes down, easily reproducing 22Hz in a room. This combination of the exceptional TC21 and 33M22 drives offers both the openness and transparency of a four-way unit together with the sound coherence of a classic two way.

Of course we are also including the two original Strombolis that shipped with the Baltic. The Cabasse Baltic/Stromboli is indeed an exceptional speaker which provides a very neutral and natural sound but it is also rather complex to setup, you need to have a good active cross over and two stereo amplifiers to make it work. By replacing the stromboli with the active Thor-II you will be able to setup the system in no time. Then, if you feel like playing with active cross overs and multiple amplifiers, you can always try to get the Thor+Strombolis+Baltics in one system.

About Cabasse

Cabasse is a French manufacturer of loudspeakers. Cabasse has been the undisputed National leader (and now largely exported) of the best speakers money can buy, since it was founded in the 1950. Gorges Cabasse, the founding president on the firm, was the first to demonstrate that acoustic speakers could actually be substituted for the original instruments, using their recorded spound. Since then, it has become an enssential Cabasse tradition to compare their speakers, not to other speakers, but to the original sound, in live comparison sessions. Such sessions are often demonstrated by Cabasse at the shows in Europe and has always been outstanding in my experience. To get so close to the realism of instruments, Cabasse had to rething the acoustic speaker, then design and manufacture every element of its speajers, begining with the drive units. This was a great challenge for the Cabasse design team: proprietary creation facilities including an exceptional acoustics laboratory. It is equiped with three measurement chambers: an echo chamber, a semi-reverberating chamber and a 2000m3 anechoic chamber, the largest in Europe. The high quality of data supplied by these measurements areas has enabled the computing workshop to develop original measurement programs which integrate the requirements of real sound reproduction, whatever the listening room. Today all Cabasse speakers stem from these measurement protocols and are able to reproduce original sound as close as possible to the truth. Because the only music you should hear is the one you love and that alone, without coloration or distortion. No doubt this is why Cabasse is the French make envied by the world, the only make which offers a lifetime warranty for all its speakers, and has been doing it for decades now.

Seleco SVD 500 Plus

This Seleco is the best Home Theater and Multimedia projector there is, period. The picture quality is outstanding, the color saturation and contrast are absolutely fantastic and talk about black level - something you are not about to find in any DLP or LCD projector. This projector normally retails for $10995 with an additional $300 for the celing mount bracket (here included). When I purchassed it, Seleco was also offering an additional external line doubler (the famous DVDO) for only $400 if puchassed with the projector (a $800 value otherwise). This projector is in mint condition, it has been ceiling mounted since the begining and was used in a dark demo room with brightness set at 20 and contrast at 50 (out of 100). It was only used 1200 Hours which is less that 10% of the life expectancy of the tubes (see CRT technology here after).

A Superior technical specification and stylish design combined to create a unique mix of performance and elegance. The SVD 500 Plus offer the ultimate in high quality large screen viewing; an experience of image quality only available from CRT technology. The SVD 500 Plus prejector features 7" high brightness CRTs and high definition, fully color-corrected HD6 lenses, which provide superb image quality. Featuring the latest in electronic innovation, this projector is fully modular in design and equiped with the latest Up Converter (UPC 2000). By using gold-plated edge connectors to the main board, the UPC 2000 provides superior PAL/SECAM/NTSC signals by doubling the lines or doubling the field (100Hz).

The projector uses a DTI digital circuit to increase color resolution, and a COMB filter to reduce cross color / cross luminance. It is also equiped with a noise reduction system, a specific circuitry to enhance the dynamic focus. hue control (for NTSC) and sharpness control. Convergence and set up are controlled by remote and all of the projector parameters: setup configuration, image aspect ratio including 4/3, 16/9 anamorphic or widescreen and scan frequencies can be selected, copied, moved and saved in up to 25 memory banks.

Also, the SVD 500 Plus also accepts input signals with 15-16KHz and 32-38KHz horizontal frequency which allows you to display high quality video sources (PAL, SECAM, NTSC), the interlaced Grand Alliance HDTV as well as Personal Computer images (VGA, S-VGA). The SVD 500 Plus offers a comprehensive range of inputs - RGBHV, Y-Cr-Cb (Component input), VGA, S-VHS, Video 1 and Video 2 through SCART socket (Peritel), BNCs, mini-DIN4 pin and DB15 and DB9 Serial Interface.

CRT Technology

CRT (Cathode Ray Tubes) technology enables the projection of artefacts free images with excellent color reproduction, gray scale adjustement, and unbeatable contrast ratio. CRT-based projectors are the ideal solution for the discerning Home Theater enthusiast as well as the professional, providing the best video performance for a real cinema-like atmosphere. CRT: How it works: A video projector is equiped with 3 CRTs: each displaying one single color image of Red, Green and Blue and an optical lens to display the 3 separated color images on screen. CRT technology produces the highest contrast ratio, resulting in a better black level detail than its rival projection technologies. This is achieved by the ability of CRT technology to literally 'switched off' when a black image is displayed, resulting in a 'true black' level detail. The opposite occurs when a bright image is displayed, concentrating all of its power into the brightness of image. As CRT technology is not based on a matrix concept, it is able to display very high resolution, without artefacts, from directi input sources. An impressively long tube life of 12,000 hrs at full brightness can be enjoyed, with a further 3000-5000 hrs of very good image quality as the tubes begin to fade 'very slowly' in brightness: this tube life equates to one movie per night for 20 years, before the tubes will need to be replaced!

Sigma 20-40/F2.8 Lens

This new 20-40mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF lens provides f2.8 large maximum aperture for all focal lengths between ultra-wide angle 20mm to 40mm.

The lens has minimum focus distance of 11.8 inches (30cm) at all focal lengths and maximum magnification is 1: 4.6. It incorporates aspherical lenses in the front lens group and rear lens group to minimize distortion, astigmatism and spherical aberration.

The lens is equipped with a DF (Dual Focus) mechanism and also an IF (Inner Focus) system. It is easy to hold the lens during shooting, since the focusing ring does not rotate during auto focusing, and yet it provides adequate dampening of the focusing ring during manual focusing of the lens.

This lens is designed to be desirable for both digital SLR cameras and conventional 35mm SLR camera.

Sigma's new 20-40mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF lens is equipped with a removable type lens hood (Petal shaped hood) to prevent extraneous light harmful for image quality.

This Sigma lens is equiped with the Sigma AF mount (for Sigma cameras). I owned it since January (along with a SD9) but I had to sell my camera last month. It is in mint condition for I really only used it a few weeks. I have all the original packaging, I didn't even fill out the warranty card or pulled the user's guide out of the plastic pouch it comes in. This lens works with all Sigma AF cameras and with it's amaizing F2.8, if allows you to experience your viewfinder in a nice bright and clear new way. If you own the Sigma SD9, it turns out to be roughly a 35-70/F2.8 which is a nice zoom coverage.
